The Decedent
The Decedent is a found footage horror film about a young mortician who encounters a supernatural force while working on the body of a deceased serial killer in a family-owned funeral home.
My Thoughts
Interesting indie effort
I do like to watch low budget Indie films, and this one is a Tubi and Kickstarter collaboration, and we should always support independent filmmaking.
Nice premise
A mortician discovers a note on a former serial killer’s corpse is so simple but intrigues you straight away.
Found footage works
I know not everyone is a fan of found footage horror movies, but the format worked well here I thought.
Slow build
The first half focuses on the characters and setting, as it builds quite slowly, which allows the tension to build and land when it needs to, but some might find it a bit too slow.
Midway Point
Midpoint onwards the film kicks more into gear, if you can make it that far.
Low budget, high effort
The film makes the most of the limited resources, even if you do notice some of the limitations it has.
Camera variety helps
Switching the perspectives really helped make the story more visually interesting.
Humor
The light humor from Duncan helps balance everything quite well when on show.
Engaging story
The mystery and suspense are clear and simple, with no need to over complicate anything.
Short runtime constraints
At 80 or so minutes, the film feels like it rushes through some of the plot points,
Familiarity
Found footage and supernatural horror lovers might find it all a bit too familiar.
Not groundbreaking, but effective
It doesn’t try much new, as mentioned, but it executes it well enough to be fairly fun.
Final Thoughts on The Decedent
It’s familiar, but I found it satisfying enough, especially for a low budget film, with a half decent blend of suspense and practical effects.
But I suspect a lot of people might zone out in the first half as it builds quite slowly if that’s not your jam.
5.5 out of 10
UP: Practical horror, found footage execution, story
DOWN: Familiarity issues, short runtime limits depth, not really innovative enough.

Simon Leasher
A lover of cinema for over 35 years, I have watched many films from around the world in many different genres, yet I still normally always come back to trashy slasher horror films when in doubt. More
And yes, The Godfather 2 is better than The Godfather.
