Still early days with lots no doubt still to be announced, but these are the 2027 horror films I currently have on my looking forward to list.
The Exorcist: Martyrs
A rookie detective investigating a case in a small town comes up against something far darker than she was expecting.
I’ve been looking forward to this one since Mike Flanagan got the job, as while I wasn’t particularly bothered about another Exorcist movie after the last one, but Flanagan taking over has completely changed that.
We still don’t know a massive amount about the story yet, and I certainly don’t need nor want some enormous new mythology here - just give me a good supernatural story and let Flanagan do his thing with it.
The Exorcist: Martyrs is scheduled for release on March 12, 2027.
Skeletons
A young boy slowly discovers that his parents are hiding a disturbing secret about his mother’s true nature.
Skeletons sounds like it could be messed up, which is good, and is being described as a creature horror movie, where the whole thing seems to be built around the kid slowly figuring out what is going on with his mother.
J.T. Mollner is directing, and he made Strange Darling, which I loved - there’s not a huge amount else out there yet, but it’s on my list.
Skeletons is scheduled for release on June 4, 2027.
The Blair Witch Project
The story details are being kept quiet, but a new group will once again become involved with the Blair Witch mythology.
I’m not going to pretend I’m not curious about another Blair Witch movie, as I am in the camp of really liking the original, where I still remember it coming out with all the brilliant marketing around it, and I still think the idea of wandering around the woods with no idea where you are is simple enough to keep working.
This is also being directed by Dylan Clark, who came from making horror shorts on YouTube, and the original film’s creators Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez are involved as executive producers.
The less I know about what is actually waiting in those woods, the better.
The Blair Witch Project is scheduled for release on September 24, 2027.
Wolf Creek: Legacy
An American family finds themselves in the Australian outback and in the hunting grounds of the murderous Mick Taylor.
Hell yeah, another Wolf Creek with John Jarratt back as Mick Taylor, and I’m all in, featuring another family getting stuck in the outback and Mick finding them, and then just being a bit of a git, which is fine with me, as I just want to see what sort of horrible stuff Mick gets up to this time.
Wolf Creek: Legacy is scheduled for release on March 19, 2027.
Pendulum
After attending a new-age retreat in New Mexico, a couple begin to question what is really happening around them.
The whole new-age retreat thing always sounds a bit weird, and hopefully it doesn’t turn into some boring cult movie where everyone spends half the film talking about their beliefs - give me some proper weird shit happening and I’ll be happy.
A trailer has already been released.
Pendulum is scheduled for release on January 1, 2027.
The Third Parent
During a Fourth of July celebration, a disturbing figure named Tommy Taffy forces himself into an unsuspecting family’s life.
I’ve seen the Tommy Taffy story mentioned loads of times and it’s one of those Creepypasta things that people either seem to know or have never heard of, but I’ve read it, so I’m fairly curious about this one.
I’m not going into the story here because it gets darkm and there’s no point ruining it, and while The Third Parent could be horrible, I hope they actually stick with the source material instead of toning everything down.
That’s one I’ll definitely be watching when it turns up.
The Third Parent is scheduled for release on January 22nd.
Gremlins 3
Gizmo and the Gremlins are back for another movie in the long-running creature horror comedy series.
Obviously I’m watching Gremlins 3. I’ve been waiting long enough for another one - the original Gremlins is still brilliant, and I also love the second one for how stupid and silly it is, and always them them every Christmas, and I am very happy we are getting those little bastards back.
Chris Columbus is directing and returning to the franchise he originally wrote, with Steven Spielberg also back as executive producer - that’s good enough for me.
Oh, and I know some people don’t put these films in the horror category, but I put them in the creature feature/horror-comedy realm, so don’t be that person.
Gremlins 3 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2027.
Monitor
A content moderator deletes a disturbing video and becomes involved with a supernatural threat that begins appearing through the screens around her.
I like the setup here, and it premiered at SXSW earlier this year, and already has had some fairly decent early reactions from some that have seen it, so hopefully we get a decent horror movie out of it.
Monitor is scheduled for release on April 16th.
They Follow
Jay returns roughly ten years after the events of It Follows, with the details of what has happened to her since the first movie being kept secret.
It Follows is a horror movie where I really didn’t think we needed a sequel, so I’m quite interested to see what David Robert Mitchell has come up with after all this time - Maika Monroe is also back as Jay.
Apparently we’re jumping forward around ten years, and Monroe has said the script is very dark and pushes things further, but words are cheap, but I have a good feeling in my bones this will be good, and it’s been a long wait for this one, so I’m definitely watching it when it finally arrives.
They Follow is currently expected to be released in 2027, although an exact date has not been announced.
