Chaotic, loose style
Clever integration of archival footage
Humor
Encourages reflection
Bad Points
Loses momentum slightly in the final act
This isn’t a typical comedy.
From the start here, pretty much everything feels incredibly loose, as we stumble along with Matt and Jay, capturing moments that feel stolen from real life, where nothing is entirely scripted (or at least doesn't feel that way).
Matt and Jay bicker constantly, blame each other for every disaster, and double down on terrible ideas with some shocking confidence - and yet, there’s real affection beneath all the chaos, where their dynamic completely carries the film.
Time travel rules are optional.
We also get some nice plays and ideas popularized by Back to the Future, except here the rules are more flexible, and sometimes barely explained, but that looseness perfectly suits the characters - these are not men who would plan a neat, logical time machine; they would stumble into one and hope for the best.
Director Matt Johnson integrates actual clips from his earlier projects, including The Dirties and BlackBerry, into the narrative, and the effect is startlingly effective - present-day Matt and Jay interacting with their 2008 selves feels very clever, a meta layer that adds some nice texture.
Awkward commitment humor runs deep.
Comedically, the film is very specific, if awkward, and definitely borderline uncomfortable at times, but I laughed out loud multiple times, as the comedy is both sharp and personal.
It does run a little long toward the end, as the energy dips slightly, and while the climax is fine, it doesn’t explode the way the preceding chaos suggests it might.
Still, even in this stretch, the film’s charm and originality carry the experience forward, and by the time it’s all over, I did find myself reflecting on my own life choices and missteps.
That’s when it hit me - this movie does more just than entertain.
Final Verdict
Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie is brilliant, fairly original, and better than that, it’s really bold.
And you have to respect boldness.
