I will start by saying, none of these films I have listed below are so obscure that no-one has ever heard of them. Hell, a couple of them have even been widely acclaimed in the indie world. But I do think they are hidden gems. I barely see them mentioned on sites, or when discussing films with people, and most of them don’t have too many IMDB reviews either.
And yes, this is a part 1, and will cover multiple genres. And as always, if you want to know if they are streaming in your location, just use Just Watch.

The Battery (2012)
A zombie movie with a near zero budget but all the heart and smart character work you wish every undead film had. The quiet tension is a masterclass in “less is more.”
I Am Not a Serial Killer (2016)
A teenage boy with sociopathic tendencies hunts a real monster. Dark, weird, and emotionally nuanced – definitely not your usual horror fare.
Bellflower (2011)
Post-apocalyptic love story meets DIY filmmaking insanity. The homemade weapons and flare give it a real gritty charm that you don’t see in polished studio films, and it’s part of what makes it good.
The Fits (2015)
A poetic and mysterious look at adolescence, identity, and belonging with some of the most arresting visuals you’ve never seen.
The Transfiguration (2016)
A vampire story told through the eyes of a troubled teen in NYC. Gritty, haunting, and deeply original.
Columbus (2017)
A visually stunning meditation on architecture and human connection. Slow, quiet, and oh so beautifully composed.
The One I Love (2014)
A relationship drama with a mind-bending twist that I very much doubt you will see coming. Go on, tell me you did…
The Little Hours (2017)
Absurdist comedy set in a convent starring the brilliant Alison Brie and Aubrey Plaza. It’s irreverent, raunchy, and utterly hilarious.
Tangerine (2015)
Shot entirely on iPhones (The 5s I believe), this very raw comedy-drama gives voice to marginalized communities with so much humor and heart.
