Zombie Apocalypse (2011)
After a zombie plague wipes out most of America, a small band of survivors fights its way across the country to reach a rumoured refuge on the island of Catalina.
My Thoughts on Zombie Apocalypse
Classic zombie setup
Three friends holed up in a cabin, running low on supplies, venturing into town – it’s nothing new, but it sets the stage well enough.
Ving Rhames saves the day
His sudden arrival with a squad of survivors is pure movie magic.
Fun supporting crew
The military-type guy, wisecracker, and sword-wielding woman all bring fun personalities.
Zombie kills
Arrows in the eyes, running zombies, and unexpected deaths make for some decent scenes.
CGI Comedy
Blood effects often miss, zombies are poorly integrated, and the final CGI tiger is laughably bad, and while the technical side is clearly low-budget, but it adds unintentional comedy.
Lead drama fits the tone
Taryn Manning’s whiny, overreacting performance could easily annoy, but in a campy zombie movie it actually works well to enhance the absurdity.
Borrowed but effective
The film leans heavily on tropes, as you would probably expect, but it executes them well in a dumb way.
Pacing mostly solid
Action is constant once the story kicks off, and scenes move quickly enough to maintain energy despite CGI quirks or plot holes.
Gore
Zombie action dominates, where some kills are messy, others funny, but there’s almost no room for suspense – intended or not.
Character quirks
Each character has quirks or flaws that make their interactions amusing and unpredictable, where even bad choices are funny to watch.
Predictable beats, but fun
Despite clichés, the execution is lively enough that keeps it fun.
Tone consistent
The movie never pretends to be serious, and it embraces the ridiculous premise of zombies, archery crews, and sword fights.
Guilty pleasure factor
It’s incredibly silly, but entertaining enough, and fans of over-the-top zombie mayhem will likely enjoy it despite the flaws.
Final Thoughts on Zombie Apocalypse
Zombie Apocalypse is so dumb, but it knows how to entertain.
It has constant action so I was never bored, along with some quirky characters, and Ving Rhames holding it all together.
Absurd, but fun enough.
My Rating For Trashy Dumb Fun: 6/10
UP: Ving Rhames, zombie kills, quirky characters, archery crew, pacing
DOWN: CGI, inconsistent acting, grating at times, low-budget visual flaws, predictable story beats

And yes, The Godfather 2 is better than The Godfather.
