The Six Very Best Horror Comedies

I am sure most people would have watched these horror comedies before, but if you haven’t, time to sort that out.

These 6 films are ones I watch quite regulary, and for good reason.

Shaun of the Dead

Let’s start with the obvious, Shaun of the Dead, part of the Three Flavors Cornetto Trilogy.

If you haven’t seen this film, you might still know the line, “You’ve got red on you,” and if you don’t, you really need to fix that.

Edgar Wright managed to create a film that is equally a love letter to zombie movies and a brutally funny social commentary on slackers in modern society – I mean, watching Shaun go about his mundane life, dealing with his pathetic flatmate and the absolute chaos of a zombie apocalypse, is just hilarious.

Evil Dead 2

Evil Dead 2 is just insane, where Sam Raimi went full throttle on everything, and Bruce Campbell as Ash is just a peak over-the-top hero.

It really doesn’t give you a second to catch your breath, as you’ve got limbs flying everywhere, chainsaws, and people screaming in the most exaggerated ways imaginable, and it’s just brilliant.

The best part is that it knows it’s ridiculous, and it doesn’t try to hide the absurdity of what’s happening, and watching Ash fight his own possessed hand while delivering some of the funniest lines in horror history is a moment I will never get tired of.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil

If you haven’t seen Tucker and Dale vs Evil, you need to stop reading this and go watch it, where two lovable hillbillies are mistaken for killers by a group of oblivious college kids.

The comedy is constant here in the most stupid of ways – every misunderstanding is funnier than the last, and the deaths, though technically horrific, are played with this perfect comedic timing.

Watching Tucker and Dale try to explain themselves is just endlessly funny. and it’s all just very clever, charming, and ridiculous, and I absolutely adore it.

Deadstream

Deadstream is incredibly underrated, but it deserves attention, as we watch a disgraced internet streamer try to salvage his reputation by spending the night in a haunted house.

The whole film is shot in a found footage POV style, which I guess isn’t for everyone, but it’s worth a watch, and I loved how it pokes fun at online culture while still delivering some genuine horror moments, probably more horror moments than most horror comedies.

Ready or Not

At first, Ready or Not is a quirky thriller about a bride joining a wealthy, eccentric family, and then it turns when everyone starts hunting her for sport.

It’s insane and I loved every second of it – just pure adrenaline wrapped in absurdity, where the comedy hits hard because the characters are so unbelievably pompous and ridiculous.

Cabin in the Woods

Cabin in the Woods will make you question why you even watch horror in the first place, as it starts out like a classic teen horror setup, and then it throws everything you think you know about the genre out the window.

It plays with expectations, with every cliché flipped, every trope examined, and it does it all with a straight face.

Brilliantly, self-aware, and endlessly entertaining.
